You are looking instead of Twitter since Elon Musk’s acquisition? Some social media users switched to Mastodon, a standard version with similar features. For anyone who is getting rid of Twitter and feels free to try something else, Discord is another good choice.
Unlike Twitter, Discord is divided into interest-based servers without a shared feed. New to the platform? Even if you understand the basics, it can be difficult to find that first server with a group that shares your interests.
I don’t know where to start? Here are a few Discord servers worth checking out:
- The middle trip: Next year, artificial intelligence will remain one of the most exciting areas of technology. Want to create your own AI-generated art? Join the main Discord server for Midjourney, a tool that uses AI to convert key words into four images. After reading the server instructions, jump into the script the new ones. Midjourney offers about 25 questions for free. Instead of just thinking of the first one to reach you, consider browsing other channels to see the conversations that are happening and the keywords that AI-powered developers are using. A dragster? Continue using this tool with a monthly subscription to Midjourney starting at $10 per month. Don’t forget that DALL-E, another AI image processing tool, is now available for everyone to try as well.
- Spacecord: Did you stay up late to watch the meteor shower? Are you impressed with NASA’s successful asteroid strike? You may want to go to the Spacecord server. Videos cover everything from space exploration to amateur astronomy. Go to the #topic-of-the-week channel to discuss topics like democracy in space and the fantasy Planet 9. Looking for something more? The Science and Technology server might be a good place to start.
- r/apple: Oh, you’re also a fan of gadgets and gizmos? Consider checking out the ar/Apple and r/Google Discord servers. These servers are not affiliated with the companies in question; is an extension of the community created on Reddit. People who are regulars in the Apple ecosystem can ask for buying advice and give their two cents on the latest iOS updates.
- r/Google: On Team Pixel? Are you grateful for the Stadia refund? The r/Google server could be your place. On this server, Google users and device owners can post new IO messages and request technical support from the community. It also includes the company’s Twitter feed.
- The World of Coding: If you are interested in programming and want to know more about how to code, check out the World of Coding server. Video topics include specific programming languages, such as Rust and JavaScript, as well as general ones, such as cybersecurity.
- Buildapc: Whether you’re building professionally or just looking for hardware, PC enthusiasts will feel right at home on the Buildapc server. It’s a great place to get new building tips and show off your creativity.
- Nerdforge: Enjoy doing some DIY projects? You can connect with people with similar interests on the Nerdforge server, an extension of the YouTube channel of the same name. A perfect little drawing or knitting a cute hat? Show in the #share-your-projects channel.
- No matter what kind of games you play: Discord is still a paradise for gamers. You can join the main server to discuss multiplayer games, such as Big ring or Pokemon. Or you could be in a small group built around indie games, like Lonely Mountains: Down. I was surprised by the upcoming release of Starfield? Check out the Bethesda Game Studio server, where you’ll also find ways to talk Elder Scrolls and Dana franchises. Yes, many areas revolve around video games, but that is not the whole picture. Try searching for an area based on one of your interests, such as plants or 3D printing. Although there is no server for everything, the selection is wider than you might first think.
If you can’t find a server that interests you, then the best option would be to set up a new Discord server. It’s easy to grow an invite-only space for your Twitter contacts! It is much more fun than other methods, such as Zoom, when it comes to chatting on the computer and connecting with friends.
