A fire broke out during a birthday celebration in a building in Jabalia city, quickly spreading to another building.
At least 21 people have been killed and many others injured after a fire broke out in the Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, according to local sources.
Al Jazeera reporter Youmna ElSayed from Gaza said the fire was caused by a gas leak during a birthday party inside the building on Thursday. “When the candles were lit, a fire broke out quickly and an explosion occurred,” he said.
The fire quickly spread through the building and spread throughout the building, ElSayed said.
The fire is now contained, but the search is on for several missing people.
The building is located in the densely populated area of Jabalia, thus increasing the chances of the fire spreading quickly to the neighboring area.
The city’s public security services are ill-equipped to deal with such incidents effectively, Al Jazeera’s ElSayed said.
