Raymond van Barneveld believes he can win this year’s Grand Slam of Darts – a decade since his last victory in Wolverhampton – after dethroning champion Gerwyn Price.

The Dutchman, who retired in 2020 but returned in February after qualifying, found himself 8-3 down in his first televised quarterfinal in three years.

However, he struggled for seven legs in a row and never looked back as his 20th 140 and sixth saw him move 13-10 ahead and the 10th leg of the 12th gave him the win before a late defeat.

“I’ve been struggling for years, but I’m very happy right now. How do I feel,” expressed Van Barneveld, reaching his first semi-final since the 2017 World Championship.

“8-3 down and I thought ‘Okay Ray, win a couple of legs against the world number one’ and then it changed.

“I’m probably in the top five of all time with Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen, Eric Bristow and John Lowe, and everyone knows I can do it.

“It’s all faith and I worked very hard. I was struggling for many years and now Julia (Evans) and I will get married next year. She is the love of my life and I am happy.

“I love playing darts, I love playing in front of this amazing team, and yes, I believe I can win this.”

‘Hawaii 501’ in fear of Barney

Wayne Mardle admitted he didn't think Van Barneveld could play as well as he did for so long against 'The Iceman'.

Wayne Mardle admitted he didn’t think Van Barneveld could play as well as he did for so long against ‘The Iceman’.

Talking with Sky SportsWayne Mardle said: “I’m friends with Raymond, I like him as a person and I like and admire him as a player, but I never thought he would do that!

“If I’m being honest, I didn’t think he could play very well for a long time. We know he can play well, but not for long against someone who does this to you. All credit, all credit.

“Gerwyn Price was really punished for his misses tonight. It was 42 per cent but forget about the number – the time he misses was punished on the hill because it was all Raymond van Barneveld’s good time.

“The 140’s, the timing, two hits under pressure is just about as good as it gets. There was a time in the game when I don’t think Raymond has thrown well in maybe his entire career.

“Speaking well was there for everyone to see and the authority he had. I don’t think many people feel that way in their racing careers or maybe their whole lives – it was great.”

Van Barneveld will now take on Michael Smith in the showpiece on Sunday night, after Smith recovered from 15-13 down to edge out Joe Cullen in a thrilling final leg decider.

“I’m happy for him,” added Mardle. “He will feel now that if I keep working hard, I will get a reward. The reward is (semi-final) against Michael Smith, who was amazing.”
