Qatari comedian Hamad al-Amari believes that the competition will showcase the culture of Qatar and the Middle East.
Qatari player Hamad al-Amari believes the World Cup, which started on Sunday, is an opportunity to “showcase” the country’s rich culture to the world.
In an interview with Al Jazeera sports presenter Sana Hamouche, al-Amari also responded to the criticism that Qatar has no football heritage.
“When we were growing up, we played football without shoes. This is what we did when we were children. “Football is the most watched sport in the country,” he said.
The speedy Al-Amari, who speaks English and is a well-known Irish team player who has lived in Ireland for many years, is not worried about the criticism that has been given to Qatar in the run-up to the tournament.
“I don’t think any other country has been exposed to the things that Qatar has been exposed to in the media,” he said, “and that’s fine, we’re still doing it. It’s happening.”
“It is our responsibility as Qataris to show our culture and bring people, that is what we are doing,” he said.
