Aref Abdelnasser Lahlouh, 20, was shot near Qalqilya in the northern West Bank.

Ramallah, occupying the West Bank – Israeli soldiers have shot and killed a Palestinian man in the northern West Bank who attempted to carry out a stabbing attack.

The man was identified as 20-year-old Aref Abdel Nasser Lahlouh by the Palestinian Ministry of Health on Wednesday morning.

Lahlouh came from the Jenin refugee camp but was killed in Qalqilya, near the illegal Israeli settlement of Kedumim.

The Israeli army said the man attempted to carry out a stabbing attack. Pictures to watch from a scene released by an Israeli news agency showed a man getting out of his car and running towards soldiers before he was shot and killed.

Images from the scene, confirmed by Al Jazeera, show Lahlouh lying on the ground after being shot.

Israeli police were seen taunting a Palestinian who appeared to be in shock after witnessing the killing.

A Palestinian was seriously injured after being shot in the chest by Israeli fire at the Shufat refugee camp in East Jerusalem, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said on Wednesday afternoon.

A large number of Israeli soldiers backed by military vehicles on Wednesday attacked the camp, demolishing the house of the family of Udai Tamimi who killed an Israeli soldier in October. Israeli forces killed Tamimi in a shootout after a 12-day manhunt.

Heavy fighting broke out with Israeli soldiers on Wednesday afternoon at the camp.

Lahlouh is the 19th Palestinian killed by Israeli forces since the beginning of 2023, including four children.

The United Nations said 2022 was the deadliest year for Palestinians living in the West Bank since 2005, when at least 170 people were killed, including more than 30 children, and 9,000 others were injured.

Since the escalation of Palestinian attacks on Israel began in March, the Israeli military launched a campaign called Operation Break the Wave, which has included daily attacks, mass arrests and killings in the occupied West Bank. Jenin and Nablus, where resistance to Palestinian weapons has grown systematically over the past year.

Israeli soldiers killed civilians they encountered during the attack – as well as bystanders who were not involved with Palestinian fighters in the massacre and conflict.

Palestinian attacks against Israeli soldiers and residents have risen in recent times.

Attacks by Palestinians in Israel and the occupied West Bank in 2022 killed 29 people, according to Israel’s foreign ministry.
