Liam Livingstone has missed all of England’s Test matches against Pakistan since 2005 due to a knee injury.
The England batsman received his first Test cap from Michael Atherton before the first day in Rawalpindi, but was injured after the first game, and did not bowl in the match.
Livingstone will return to the UK on Tuesday and begin rehabilitation with Lancashire’s medical teams and the England and Wales Cricket Board.
England have yet to decide on a replacement for the 29-year-old.
Able to bowl spin and leg spin, it was a pain for captain Ben Stokes, who had initially selected Livingstone ahead of Will Jacks who was the bowler in his first XI.
However, they all played after wicketkeeper Ben Foakes did not recover in time from a viral infection that affected 13 of the 14 members of the visiting team on the evening of the match.
Livingstone did not play much of the game and was replaced by substitute Keaton Jennings.
Although he batted again in the second innings, scoring seven not out, he bounced between the wickets and did not look good.
England have included Rehan Ahmed in their team to cover the ball.
England’s two remaining Tests against Pakistan are in Multan (December 9-13) and Karachi (Dec 17-21), all live on Sky Sports Cricket.
