Netherlands dominate USA in first knock-out World Cup match | Qatar World Cup 2022

    Qatar World Cup 2022

A 3-1 victory for the Oranje sends Team USA home.

The Netherlands have moved three goals clear of the USA to book their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar.

Despite scoring once, the USA gave their opponents a hard time, who repeatedly brought out the Stars and Stripes at the Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday.

Matt Turner in the USA goal made a stunning save to deny the Dutch a huge goal, while his opposite number Andries Noppert was called on too often.

Although the USA had long periods of bright display in the first half, often lack of composure in the final third let them down.

Instead it was the Dutch who calmly bided their time before opening up to the Americans in style.

USA striker Christian Pulisic wasted a chance to put his team 1-0 up just three minutes later, when he found himself in the air but saw his shot saved.

Netherlands’ Memphis Depay and Daley Blind scored in the first half and Denzil Dumfries added a late goal as they knocked the United States out of the World Cup with a 3-1 victory that sent the Dutch into the next round.

Cody Gakpo cleared Tim Ream’s header early in the second half to protect the Netherlands’ advantage, but the men in orange squandered the chance to settle down.

Substitute Haji Wright cut the US deficit to 2-1 in the 76th minute when Christian Pulisic’s cross hit his foot and bounced off Noppert and into the net.

Runners-up in 1974, 1978 and 2010, the Oranje extended their unbeaten streak to 19 games and will face the winner of this evening’s clash between Argentina and Australia on Friday in an attempt to win their first World Cup.
