With a bold header, Christian Pulisic punched the ball into the net and his body went past the Iranian goalkeeper, giving the US the game-winning goal and eliminating themselves from the rest of the tournament.

The US defeated Iran 1-0 on Tuesday evening at Doha’s Al Thumama Stadium, advancing their side to the Group of 16.

The injured Pulisic was helped off the field after his 38th-minute goal and was replaced after half-time by Brendan Aaronson.

Iran finished third in the group with three points and failed to advance to the next round of the tournament, something Iran has never done in the six World Cups it has participated in.

The game was tightly contested until the final minutes with Iran’s Mehdi Torabi’s shot missing the net.

The Iranian fans, who forced a crowd of over 42,000, left the stadium heartbroken.

The US will play the Netherlands in their first game in the Group of 16.
