You wouldn’t expect a trailer with zombies and 1985’s a-ha hit “Take On Me” to blow your mind, but HBO’s trailer does. The Last of Us somehow he can do it all… and more.
Video game adaptation The Last of Us takes us to a future where the world has been ravaged by a parasitic disease – which sees its victims turn into monsters called clickers. Although most people can survive this condition, there is no known cure. That’s where smuggler Joel (Pedro Pascal) comes in: He’s tasked with transporting valuable cargo westward. That property? A headstrong teenager named Ellie (Bella Ramsey), whose immunity to disease may make her the key to saving the world.
‘The Last of Us Part II’ is a triumphant success but one that is deeply flawed
This latest trailer of The Last of Us it does a great job establishing the reluctant relationship between Joel and Ellie and bringing the video game world to life. Perhaps most affecting is the audience’s reaction to the show. Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who voiced and portrayed Joel and Ellie in the video game, make quick appearances. Baker is seen playing David’s nemesis, while Johnson is playing Ellie’s mother Anna. Oh, and that song plays in most of the movie? That’s “Take Me,” which was pretty devastating The Last of Us: Part II. And so it is The Last of Us show to make us cry like a game? Based on this trailer, all signs point to yes.
The Last of Us premieres January 15 at 9 pm ET on HBO and HBO Max.
