Indian action epic, RRR it surprised a lot of people on the internet today, when it didn’t give any major Oscar chances. This was despite receiving awards from leading critics’ lists (Mashable’s among them), various critics’ awards, and being nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes.
However, RRR was not nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, as it was presented by India Hello Show (Final Film Show) on the contrary. Final Film Show made the Oscars shortlist for International Feature, but was not nominated in that category or any of the others.
Here are the Oscar 2023 nominees
However, as evidenced by the German film All Quiet on the Western Front‘s nine nominations, it is possible for an international film to receive nominations outside of the international category. We also saw this kind of praise in 2022 and Drive My CarBest Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay nominations, and in 2020 and Parasite‘s Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay wins.
Since the Academy awards big blockbusters like Avatar: The Path of Water and Top Gun: Maverickit was totally possible RRR and director SS Rajamouli to join them. In particular, he received Best Director accolades from various critics and Critics Choice Awards.
Eventually, the Academy took notice RRR in one category: Best Original Song, by MM Keeravani for the song “Naatu Naatu.”
This nomination is historic, as it is the first time that an Indian film’s music has been nominated for an Oscar. Also, “Naatu Naatu” won the same award at the Golden Globes, making it the winner of this year’s Oscars. Best of all, the song’s inclusion means we’ll get to see “Naatu Naatu,” which will have Oscars attendees (and viewers at home) tossing their dancing shoes.
